Well, it was Karate night for the Rangers again. The kids love Karate, & their teacher. They also enjoyed doing some posing for me so I could get some good shots for the Blog. Everyone seems focussed except for Joe who is well, being himself. LOL.

The blog will also be moving over to the new Blogger site soon. I thought I had told everyone on the 6th when I tried out the Beta version, however apparently that was only in my head. I can only plead Christmas gift-making overload at the moment.

So, you can go here to see what the new site will look like. This one will eventually be changed over to the new one, but because it's in Beta version the http code is slightly different until it does.

Creative Festival (aka Needlecraft Festival in T.O.)

It takes place here at the "Toronto Convention Centre" on Front St. A wonderul 4 days of needlecraft extravaganza. There were displays, booths & how-to's wall to wall; a crafter's & artist's dream.

Each year MA & I are taken down to this big event by Jack (MA's hubby). It involves careful planning to get my own family prepared for the absence of the great family organizer (aka Mom). With animals taken care of, kids ready for school, & husband set with instructions, I am off.

Set with my fanny pack, $, car knitting essentials & meds. for any ailment that might want to keep me from enjoying this annual event, I drive down to MA's house were Jack will take us the rest of the way.

We get our ritual lunch on the way at Tim's by the "Pacific Mall" & keep heading S. to our goal. Once there it's hard not to feel overwhelmed. Here you are in a room surrounded by fellow artists & supplies for your habit.

This year I picked up Bonash powder, a Vie pigment starter, the Kreinik fusable threads I've looked every where for, sock yarn & some altered art mags. It was absolutely intoxicating! A binge that I'm still not over, lol. (This is proven by the fact that I keep looking over my treasures, reading all the collected phamplets, etc.)

I saw, I felt, (I was also draped in the most wonderful cross-over capelet by the nicest & coolest Queer ever & wanted to keep it & him, lol), I enjoyed & then it was over.

We drove through "China Town" on the way to "Frans" where we usually have our celebratory dinner. Then it was home to reality (which is comforting & sucks all at the same time, lol.) Completely wiped out of $ & energy, I drove the rest of the way home where some last minute bedtime chores, my children & animals all awaited for my anticipated return. I then sat down with hubby to continue working on the knitted washcloth (from "the Mason-Dixon book") that I had started in Jack's van & watch the Ulimate fighter. Sigh, life is good.

The Comfort Doll Give-a-way & the Guild turns 20

Tommie Sue from "I-Cross Canada" met me at Cambridge United Church today. I was handing over 62 comfort dolls, that together, the Lindsay Machine Knitter's & the Fenelon Falls Machine Knitter's groups were donating for the cause. Tommie is leaving on the 18th of this month to hand out some 200 dolls to needy children in Guatemala. (For full story, check out the blog entry: May 30/06 )

Also, the Lindsay Creative Quilting Guild celebrated it's 20th year. In attendence were our founding members that were presented with corsages & a cake for this notable event.

We enjoyed a speaker from a Quilt Shop in Uxbridge & had a very grand time; as always.

Distraction

Been a very busy week thus far so I thought I would distract you with some socks. Not like I enjoy making them or anything (some might even go so far as to say that there's an addiction problem going on here, lol).

Anyway, these were done on the machine (tuck stitch which I liked the wrong side of better) for MA's B-Day. The pic was taken at the Fall Fair last week. These are so MA's colours & so I had no choice, but to immediately buy the yarn in order to make these for her. (This is what I told hubby & am sticking to this story.)

She was kind enough to let me borrow them back for the Fair, so I took the opportunity to finally get a pic & share with you all. This just goes to prove once again that "any sox is better than no sox", lol.

Welcome back.......

Just can't get that song out of my head. If you remember the theme song from this sitcom then you're at least as old as I am, lol.

These are just some pics from the Lindsay Ex. where I've been doing art demos for the last 4 yrs. I would kill to have this as my full-time job. You talk to nice people (the majority of them are anyway, lol), who are interested in what you do & you get to work on your art without kids, hubby & pets bugging you for silly stuff like meals & such for 3 straight days.

Not only this, but you're working in a building with fellow artists where the feeling is much like being a character on "CHEERS" & your assitant/support team/Sis/best bud is there keeping you company. We get to just talk, knit (or whatever project I'm working on) & eat; total bliss.

I must admit however, that once the Fair is done, it's big-time crashing for all those involved. Our homes need major cleaning (seems that nobody has children or hubby's that think to do anything while you're gone 'cause they consider this a holiday). The week working up to the Fair also contributes to the choas 'cause you're wanting to keep your set-up/booth fresh each year & thus jam like crazy during this time like a teenager preparing for exams.

The end result is worth it though as it's often one of the few times during the year that you're treated like you actually know something (family doesn't tend to do this on any kind of regular basis). Sometimes you're even praised, appreciated & worshipped (okay, maybe not this far, but it's ego stroking just the same & I'll suck it up any time I can, lol).

Everything seemed to go over really well this year too. People seemed particularily interested in the "Bras", the art dolls, crazy quilting, beading & knits. I got lots of laughs & comments over the "B-36 Bomber bra inparticular (had to do many demos, lol) & all of the thought provoking signs that I had up on the walls.

I feel much healthier now as well. The migraines have pretty much halted, & things do seem like they're improving. Still some more appts. into mid. Oct., but hopefully they will go well too. Thanks to the Lindsay Quilter's Guild for the card, the Baddow knitting group for the cake & everyone else that sent private emails or expressed concern. It was all very much appreciated.

The Yarn Harlot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You all know that I read "The Yarn Harlot 's" blog. I talk about her excessively to anyone who will listen (as well as those who won't). I convinced everyone around me to take part in "The Knitting Olympics". I plug her books & blog when I do my own trunk shows And, for the most part, I am usually thanked for putting people onto her. (Please note that I've also thanked MA numerous times for introducing me to the world of Harlot.)

MA celebrated her B-Day & because she is my bestest friend, I wanted to do something special. When I caught wind that Steph would be going to Aurora to talk, I couldn't believe it. Problem was that I didn't know: the particulars, would my surgery be done, would I be able to go, would be be able to get in, get babysitting, would Jack (MA's wonderful hubby who I adore, lol) drive us, etc.?? Anyway, after doing some research (which MA chooses to call stalking, but I beg to differ, lol). I thought that just maybe, there was a chance.

I had the surgery (a few complications & a fever, but other than that I was willing) & emailed the neccessary people.....

*I'd just like to pause here to defend the fact that I'm not a groupie; never have been the type. I don't make a habit of following unreaslistic dreams, never bought "Tiger Beat" as a teen or written a fan letter. Something inside of me snapped though (I shall insist that it was the influence of the heavy painkiller's the surgeon perscribed) & I went into panic mode. *

.....I now needed to make this happen. I hadn't heard back & when I called to confirm that there was seats avail. & saved, I was told that the extra seats were taken & only guild members were being allowed in. Okay, (stop to breath before I hyper-ventilate) there must be a way. I then did what any rational knitter (worth a grain of salt) would do:
I declared a full blown "yarn emergency"! I then posted a desparate plea to "Sandra's Blog" (S. is in the middle pic. on the left) hoping that the the yarn community would come together for one of their own. It was an absolutely shameless attempt (more like a loud cry for help to which I'm not proud, but you must understand the circumstances for G's sake).

I waited and waited (& continued to check) for my email reply. It was about 2:30 pm when I had thought I better just suck it up & accept defeat. I called my mom to tell her my trouble's, had a cold shower (our only box air-conditioner was feeling as run down as I was & not working to it's full potential) & got into my PJ's. I explained to the kids that I just wouldn't be able to be there for them 'cause I was too depressed (hey, there's only so much hard luck a person can take!)

Anyway, I made one last pass by the computer as to sign off for the night when I saw the email. It was from Jennifer (middle pic. on the right). She had wrote me last min. to let me know that there had been a couple of cancellations & there were now a few seats available for us if we wanted them!! Can you believe that?? I can't describe the noises that came out of me (remember, I still can't talk properly & screaming was out of the question). I cried, jumped around (which immediately started to cause throbbing in my face, lol) & called mom (to ask if she was still willing to watch the kids) & Jack (to see if he was still willing to drive MA & I). I even gave up my next pain pill so I could get the kids down to Lindsay where MA & Jack would pick me up at mom's. I packed my dinner (bottle of Boost), all my Harlot books, the socks & other knitterly things I wanted to show her & my camera & was off.

It was one of the single best night's of my life. I was able to do something really special for my best friend, able to see our mutual fav. blogger/knitter/etc. (I had to tell a little white lie to Samantha though 'cause she asked if it was better than her & Joe's birth: I said that of course not, but close. Truth is that I don't remember laughing or having such at good time at the births, lol.) We took pics, got to talk, listen, autographs, meet wonderful fellow knitter's! What more could someone ask for?? On the way home, we all continued to have wonderful talks & laughs. It definitely was a night to remember.

When I got home, the kids & I slept downstairs (the only cool place in the house) & sat up talking about our day. They were genuinely happy for MA & I. (This is an amazing example of empathy considering they're only 71/2 & 10, but I think it's because of how happy they saw their mom was.) My jaw was so sore from all the laughing & trying to talk, but I didn't care. Life was good.

Thank you so much to Sandra for not judging & understanding, Jennifer for emailing me without even considering that I could possibly be a nut bar (I'm not though, lol), mom for watching the kids, Mark for giving me his blessing to go (even though he didn't think I was well enough yet) & caring enough to ask how it went after he got back home for the late shift, Jack for driving, MA for being seen with me (although she did keep her distance while mingling afterwards as not to be connected with the swollen-faced idiot that sounded like she was chewing on marbles & wouldn't leave Steph. alone), the ladies at the York Guild for allowing me to come, & Stephanie who is one of the most (down-to-earth, naturally cool even though she might not think so, funniest writer & talker) greatest person in the world!! She even laughed politely as I explained of all the things that happened in order for me to be able to be there last night so we could finally meet (I'm sure she's sorry that the God's weren't strong enough to hold me back this time,lol) including why I was wearing my hubby's shorts or had to to change my undies 'cause I noticed, at my last piddle stop before I left, that the dog had ate the crotch out of the ones that I was wearing (again I blame the pain killer's for such brutal & unnecessary honesty).

Buttons, buttons & more buttons.

I was really excited about this button order for the local knitting shop. I assumed (I tell you, never assume) that the store owner (the one that had asked me to make them up) knew the whole button-making process.

The process:

1) condition the clay colours that you plan to use (this usually takes about 20 passes through various thickness settings on the pasta machine) per colour
2) do the marbling (blending the colour ways together to achieve effect- in this case I chose 3 per button)
3) cut, shape, make holes & ridges
4) bake & cool
5) The finishing (which is the part I enjoy the least for the most part) This means a 1/2 day in each of 4 stages of grit in the rock tumbler as well as some wet sanding, cleaning out holes, etc. in between
6) The final protective coating & voila!

*Anyone that has taken my "Polymer 101" classes will tell you that they never knew so much was involved. 3 days work for 18 lousy (actually they looked quite nice, lol) buttons.*

I'm getting the impression that most people think that you just roll the stuff out like cookie dough, cut them into shapes, slap them onto a sheet & bake. Apparently, this shop owner was no exception, lol. I even went to the trouble to research other polymer button maker's on the Net to get an idea of what she should be looking at charging for them retail (so as to be competitive). Needless to say, she was horrified to find out that poeple pay $1.50-$3.00 US each for a 7/8" clay button.

And I ask why not?? You're going to spend endless hours of your time, making up a beautiful piece of knitting (or crochet), using expensive yarn & then put dime store buttons on the thing? What are you nuts? Am I the only one that is in complete disbelief here?

Needless to say, I think I'm done with this place. Did I mention that I also got MA to pick up my wee bead-knitted purse necklace so I could take it to show Stephanie (you know, the Yarn Harlot)?? She loved it & I'm making her one in green, . I was even approached by a Gallery owner that wants me to make a couple up for display. Sure hope that I'm finally attracting the right crowd, I just don't understand how other's can't appreciate art (nature, life, etc). Even if something isn't "your taste" per say, can you still not appreciate the process, the artist's vision, beauty or quality?? It would be like knitting a wedding dress in Phentex for G's sake!

X-Rays & kittens, oh my.

Meet "Tora". This little guy was found in the Giant Tiger parking lot the day I went to get the ankle x-ray. (Clinic is next door to GT so everyone's parks there & walks over.)

He is absolutely precious: beautiful markings, wonderful disposition & loves the 2 other kittens that my parent's adopted. We take him with us to mom's to visit while I go to Dr. appts. He actually loves to go in the car too.

I named him "Tora" because it means "Tiger" in Japanese & I wanted something to remind him of where he was found.

Catchin up........

Just so you all know, I'm still alive (although MA did see the funeral car at the oral surgeon's the other day & I will question him about it, lol). So much has been going on. Those who know me will understand that I am (yet again) having some bad luck (hopefully my Karma debt will be paid off soon & things will get better; sure wish I knew what I had done in my past life, lol.)

Here's a quick run down:

diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (a few month's ago, but only close friend's knew); seems under control except if I overdue it (mostly in garden so please keep this in mind when you see the weeds)
have had numerous tests & x-rays
found out that at some point I've broken my ankle (which I find weird, but have heard these stories), but is too far along in the healing process to have anything done about it right now
have severe bone loss in jaw (said to match 80 yr. old). Would be okay with this except I'm 37!! They're now sending me for bone density & looking into Osteo.
Had oral surgery last week. Went okay, but still having to go for dressing changes every 3 days. Haven't had real food in a week now & still have no feeling in lower jaw & tongue. (I have been told that this can happen & should come back) Must say that it's an unusual feeling & quite embarrassing to keep asking those around you to make sure you don't drool in public, lol)

Good things:

have pratically finished the basement studio after a year of work & little $ to work with
got to take my bestest friend MA to see our mutual heroine last night. It was my last min. plea that seemed to make it possible & thus want to thank Sandra & Jennifer for making it all happen. I had truly given up all hope & couldn't believe my change of luck (hopefully we're on a roll here, lol.) So, I can now get back to blogging, pictures, life, etc.

Yes, another sock. I'm telling you all that socks are completely addictive. And why not? They're portable, quickly rewarding, everyone needs them (I could go on, but you might think me crazier than you already do).

I love making socks!! These ones were done on the fine bed knitting machine which takes only just over an hour for the pair. Of course you then spend more time stitching them up, but I save that part for "the obligitory evening T.V. watching with the hubby" (I know all you ladies know what I mean by this, lol).

The necklace is finished. OMG, lol. I've had this kit for 3 yrs. & never felt I had the time for it. I think this is how most mother's feel when the item they're making is for themselves. Anyway, it's done, it took a lot of time & was the most intense beading I've attempted, but I'm thrilled with the results.

The last 12 days

So, alot has happened the past 12 days. We had our Canada Day celebrations. We lit off fireworks (our 1st time attempting this, but it wasn't difficult & went well), had a bonfire with marshmallows, spent time outside just enjoying the fact that we're Canadians. This is still the best definition of a "Canadian" (you'll love this one). The "Yarn Harlot" probably said it just as well.

Despite efforts to save "Batty", he passed away on route to a professional Wildlife rehabilitator in Claremont (who happens to specialize in bat care; who knew). Anyway, she figured that he had suffered internal damage when he dropped down the chimney (21/2 stories high) before I found him. It's hard to understand how one can get attached to such things when only being with them a short while, but to know me is to understand (I also have a deep belief in Buddhist philosophy which probably attributes to the fact that I believe all are equal & should be treated that way).

I've also been trying to catch up on dental & Dr. appts., correspondence, gardening chores, bills, UFO's, etc. I have managed to book all the necessary appts., look lovelingly at the garden promising to get weeding (if the rain should ever stop long enough, lol), & finish off some of the UFO's.

The knitting machine obsession is going very well. I've finished a couple more of prs. of socks, & have done a whole lot of reading on the subject. I've also got one of the mini bead-knitted purses in the local yarn shop on consignment & have orders to make OOAK polymer buttons for the same store; things are looking up (but I'm afraid to say it too loud less tempt the Gods, lol.)

So, I shall bid you all adue & go get some project pics. blogged so you can all see some of the progress. Peace out, Boop

Gone Batty

Earlier this week we were gifted with a baby bat. Came down thru the chimney & out the fireplace. I'm guessing that he's (yes, I checked) just over a week old. His eyes are still shut
& he's nursing every few hours. I've been given some great advice by some online rehabbers that I contacted. Who would have thought there were actually specialist in Bat Rehab.??

Anyway, it would appear that this is going to be an all summer project. There are stages of all formula feeding, 1/2 formula mix with mushed meal worms, all mushed meal worms, getting him to take live meal worms, flying practice (which I'm told he should be able to do at just over 3 weeks), etc.

I know, I know: if it's going to happen, then it's going to happen to "Boop". And you're quite right, except I am now used to it & can thus accept the fact that weird poop (which for interest sake, bat poop is just like a mouse, lol) seems to happen to me (a lot actually).

So, I will keep you updated. Speaking of which "Hope" (the kitten) is really doing well. She has become a real handful (typical little kitten). She is eating, playing, & getting into mischief normally now. Her legs have really sprouted up. I'm hoping that she'll grow into them soon as she presently looks a little giraffe-like.

Based on the response from this weekends quiz, I've come to the following conclusions:

I've scared, confused or perplexed you all to heck, lol.

The correct answer is: My natural hair colour, lol. Of course this may not appear all that special to the average person, but I assure you that it is. In fact, my hubby nor my children have ever seen it. I didn't even remember what it was & was surprised to see that it's not all that different from what I vaguely remember (although it would appear that there's more subtle red highlights than I remember which pleased me).

The reason that I took a picture of it (& the task wasn't all that easy on my own trying to hold the camera behind my head aimed correctly) was because I was unsure if I would keep it that way & if so for how long. Let me know what you think. Thx. Back to "artsy pics" tomorrow.

Firstly, I'd like to thank all those who took the time to comment & guess. I can't tell you all how much more rewarding blogging is when you actually know that people are reading it, lol. I know you're all faithful, however it's always nice to have validation in the form of hard copy, lol.

I can't believe that someone actually got it right too. I thought that most people would think it was a "Betty Boop" which of course would make sense, but a "Popeye"? Never thought anyone would figure that one out. And to think that the person who did was also the one who probably knows the least about me. I'm calling it luck.

Anyway, I've tied in the ends, blocked it & will now just sew it in place. I only chose this pic above a "Betty" to first throw you all off & secondly because Popeye's infamous words describe how I feel about myself & my little (albeit sometimes big) quirks.

FYI: The tank top was done on a fine bed knitting machine & the panel was done by hand.

I really enjoyed the interaction & enthusiasm that I received because of this blog entry so I think I shall continue on a more interactive basis. Please don't be afraid to comment, all is appreciated & worth while.

Knit Jewellery

Here's another wee bead-knitted purse necklace. I absolutely adore making these things. Again, done on #0000 knitting needles (special order) & many, many seed beads (over 1200 in the purse part alone).

I'm presently working on an Intarsia panel for a top I made. It's quite an intricate pattern, but I hope to have pics by Mon.

Knitting for a Cause

Here are a couple of quick pics, showing you all what's being knit up at some of the "Machine Knitting Groups".

It amazes me how many different charities & items these knitter's are involved with. These groups don't have a lot of members either. Unlike the almost 200 that belong to the "Quilting Guild" in town, the Machine Knitters have about 7 & 16 respectively. Based on percentages, the knitter's would put any other Guilds to shame with what they manage to make up in a year for the various groups in need.

I've only shown 2 items, but they give to The Police, Red Cross, ICross Canada, The Hospital, The Cancer Society & The Salvation Army. Items included are: blankets, hats, scarves, mittens, comfort dolls, wheelchair bags, chemo hats, slippers, etc.

If you're like a lot of us, then giving $ is hard to do on a limited budget, but if you're handy it's not a problem. Think about giving your time instead by making up a few things. Most of the time there's no cost involved either. Charities usually have a source for donated supplies & you need only call to find out.

Bras, bras, bras (literally)

So, it was "Guild Day". We decided to spice up our June Potluck a little by showing off the latest works of "The CQ'teers".

I had challenged the girls this Spring to alter a bra any way they wanted to. The idea being that we'd take pics of the finished ones & then incorporate the shots into a quilt by printing them onto fabric. The quilt would then be sent off to "The Quilt" for next year's auction to raise funds for Breast Cancer research.

(From left to right) Irene was sporting a foral number that she embellished by sticking silk flowers all over. MA crazy-quilted hers & then lined the cups with a kitty on each side (the idea being 2 cats in bags yowling to get out). With mine I wanted to show that small bossoms can be powerful too. Ever since I was a kid I would get teased for being "small", but I'm quite okay with that; it's everyone else that seems to have a problem. Anyway, I called my piece "the B-36 Bomber". I had hot glued fans in the cups so that they worked just like propellers. I then told the group that small busted women should essemble & be proud to be a part of the "Itty Bitty Titty Committee", lol.

I don't think the Quilt Guild was exactly prepared for us, but based on all the laughter, they seemed to enjoy it just the same, lol. We had so many positive comments from our creative "Show & Tell" that I'm not sure what we'll have to do next to top that one; but we do have some ideas!

Not what you think

I know, I know........ & trust me I thought that the pattern was turning out just a wee bit phalic
as well. However, once you start the finishing process it does get better, lol. These are from the #2 knit pattern (African Comfort Dolls) on the "ICross Canada" site.

The pattern says to stuff & then embellish, but I think you could avoid at least 2 blisters if you did that part before. Trying to stitch yarn thru the already stuffed body was a real #$%^& to say the least. I think you'll thank me later should you decide to heed this little bit of advice.

Hope Update

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone who emailed, left comments, sent prayers, etc. for Hope. I went to town today to pick up my daughter (who was kitty sitting) & check in on the wee one. I'm very pleased to announce that she seems to be on the road to recovery.

A few days ago we had to gently squeeze food down her throat with a shringe & rub under her chin to make her swallow. She couldn't hold her head up on her own & was so weak & frail.

As of today she is able to drink (eagerly) from the dropper, is taking small amounts of wet food & is walking (sometimes even running) on her own. The changes in Hope are remarkable to say the least. I just wanted you all to share in this little miracle.

While I was out doing "The Buckhorn" talk yesterday, my parents were watching my children. Samantha had talked my mom into taking her & Joseph down to the Humane's Society (where my mother volunteers) to see the new animals.

When they arrived, some of the ladies were in tears because this little kitten was barely alive. (My parent's cat Spanky had passed away during a routine teeth cleaning procedure at the Vets the day before). Anyway, mom offered to take it home so at least she would pass away in comfort & not alone in a cage. They stopped in at the Vets on the way & he felt that if they could just get some liquids into her that there might be some hope. He said that the next 24hrs would tell whether she would live or not. (The mother of the kitten had rejected it, leaving her critically weak & dehydrated.

Anyway, they had just brought the kitten home when soon after I arrived back from Buckhorn. I had a look over the kitten (I also have my Vet Assistant Diploma) & definitely felt that it dehydration & could possibly be saved. I was able to get 1 shringe (3cc each) of water & 4 of formula into the wee thing over the next few hours while I was there.

I called this morning & my parents had continued with the formula & even got the kitten to lick some soft food from their fingers. My daughter had named the precious little thing "Hope" yesterday & so the name has kind stuck. Please send your prayers so that "Hope" gets a second chance. It would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

The Girls from Buckhorn

Well, today was the day that I had my 1st "real" talk. Meaning public speaking (with real people; hard to believe, but true) & it was a paid event too. Can you believe it? I find it so ironic that I've spent the 1st part of my life not wanting to be heard & now I'm being asked to share my knowledge. (How sweet the revenge that is best served cold. How great it is to feel wanted, appreciated & praised; sorry for the Shakespearian moment, I'm just excited.)

I was also taken to lunch & best that I could tell, no one was threatened to say nice things to me, they did it of their own free will! Wow. One could really get used to this kind of treatment. Upon returning home to a house full of animals & chores waiting for me, life quickly gets put into perspective. I think this is God's way of keeping you humble; reality bites. LOL.

Anyway, I had the Ladies from the "Buckhorn Quilter's Guild" hold 2 of the dolls that I travel with (Lorelie & Morticia) so I could get a group picture. (There were a lot of them so I had to do it in 2 pics. )The 3rd one is of Grace who I was told was the trouble-maker (aka Brat). I have to say that she was fine with me, but they assured me that I was only seeing her best side, lol.

Thank you ladies for such a positive experience. I greatly appreciated your hospitality & will remember this day as special.

Spongebar Squarepants

So, I finally receive my Brother KX-350 from Ebay. Apparently in working order, etc. I take said machine to the Lindsay Machine Knitter's Guild (the one where I met the Prez. online which I told you all about last month) & get ready to set her up. Marg (the Prez) checks the needles & says that I need a new spongebar (to which she has a couple of extras, thank goodness). Okay, so we take out all the needles & prepare to attach the new to the old so we can pull the new one thru (like suggested on another online machine knitter's group that I belong to).

I start pulling & look what came out!!! Can you believe this?? Totally shot, powdery sticky mess. I then spent the majority of my time trying to clean this up (by that I mean the table, floor, machine & myself). This was so gross; like some kind of goowy nicotine-like substance. The bar is suppose to look like this:
Big difference, eh? Anyway, after this I was able (with some more help) to get the new spongebar in & half of the needles back. Only trouble was that I didn't get them under the bar & will now have to take the needles back out & try again. This is when I decided to pack up my children & things & bid farewell; even I can be aware of my limitations sometimes.

After only having a few hrs. sleep the night before 'cause of allergies, my self just wasn't in full working form. Thought it best to get home while I thought I could still make it, lol. As for the ladies: they were very warm, nice, supportive, talented, & knowledgeable. They accepted me (& my funny Boop ways) without hesitation (which I assure you is unique & special). I will defihnitely be going back :o).

ICross Canada

Yesterday, I attended a meeting where they had a speaker (Tommie S.) from "ICross Canada". It is a charitable organization that helps the poor in Africa. One of the programs that they have sends medical supply kits using "Comfort Dolls" to act as packing material during shipment. These dolls are then given out to the poor as well as those children suffering from AIDS. It is a great cause & I would encourage anyone who knits (or crochets) to check this out at: www.icross.ca/

The dolls are very quick & easy to make. The only criteria is that you use tan, brown or black yarn for the face, otherwise the colours & clothing styles are up to you. A written pattern is available on their web site.

Shake your booties

This is a pic. of the baby booties & hat that I'm sending off to my friend in Indiana, along with some other goodies. We already know that this future grandchild is going to be a boy, making the yarn choice a whole lot easier.

The wee hat was done on the smallest "knifty knitter loom" & only took a couple of hours. You can pick up a set of 4 from Michaels for $19.99 (very often on sale for $12.99).

The booties are from a book called: "Stitch'n Bitch Nation". The 2nd one in a series by Debbie Stoller. Great book if you like more youthful & funky knits. The pattern (1hr baby booties by Heidi Neurauter pg.217) is quick & easy (took over an hour though, lol). The only changes that I made were an adjustment to the suggested needle size (my choice of yarn was working up too small) & I used velcro on the straps instead of buttons (I never use buttons on things for babies). I thoroughly enjoyed making these booties. Is there anything cuter (okay, perhaps baby buns, lol.)?

A couple of nice little projects that don't require a lot of thinking, which is especially important when you're being constantly interrupted by 2 children getting over colds, lol.

Knitting Rules!

Finally, our books came! I've had this latest S.P-M. book pre-ordered for what seemed like an eternity. I recently saw it out in the wild a couple of weeks ago, but knew that by waiting for my Amazon.ca order, I was saving $5- ; Chapters of course was the more expensive choice. (By the way, I'm not cheap, just thrifty 'cause I have to be. I also find it silly to pay more for something just because one can't wait & needs instant gratification.)

I happened to be on my way into town so I dropped off MA's copy. This way we can talk about the book when we email back & forth. I can't wait to read this & am only writing to update you all before I start otherwise I'd be too absorbed to think about the Blog, lol.

Also, (you had better sit down for this one) my knitting machine arrived!! Yes, ordered Apr. 5th from Ebay, & held up at Canadian customs since May 5th. Unbelievable, but it's here & it's beautiful & I can't wait to set it up & try it tomorrow :o).

I also have a few projects on the go which I hope to finish this weekend & post pics for: mini bead knitted purse (black/silver), crochet sandals & a fine knitted top that I've been doing on the KnitKing.

Mother's Day

I hope everyone had a lovely Mother's Day today. My hubby made his famous homemade waffles for breakfast & a big pot of decafe for me. After, I was given my prezzies which included the 2 metal sculpture cranes & knome featured in the picture. The knome is really neat 'cause it has a solar panel on the back so that his little lantern glows at night.

We also went out for a drive to check on the Walleyes again. They were so close that I could touch them (& much to the kids delight, tried to several times, lol). No suckers yet, but will keep you all posted.

Came back home to a big meal that hubby had prepared & I actually got Gran's machine knitting something more than swatches. Won't tell you what yet, but I'll hopefully have a pic sometime later this week.

Lamp a Go Go

So, I've had this rattan sphere for a few years. I'm the type of person that is given a lot of odd garage sale finds 'cause I really dig the unusual (to say the least). When I received this object I immediately knew I was going to fill it with lights & hang 'er up. (And that's exactly what I did.)

However, now that I'm redoing the Turret where this little number happened to be residing, I decided to give her a make-over. Since I'm going with a Japanese theme, I thought I would try covering her in some soft white cotton. Of course this ended up being strips of 2 different ones because I didn't have enough of either & wanted it to look like a plan, lol.

This was an easy redo: cut the materials into strips, serge together, added gathering hem to the top & bottom, put some yarn threw, place over the ball & gather into place. Done.

The picture doesn't show how nice the light really is, but I wanted you all to see it. I'm so happy with & excited about the next few things for the room too: pillows & a chair redo.

Crochet bunny blankie buddy

First, let me give you the progress report on the Knitting Sanctuary (aka the Turret). I managed to get the room prepped & one coat of primer up on Fri. while hubby was at work. Sat. another coat of primer while he did an oil change on my van. Sun. he had a Union meeting so we started the good paint. Today he was mowing the lawns (which on 2.5 acres takes 3 hours, lol) & I finished the painting.

I am so thrilled!!! Can ya tell? He was still outside when I managed to do a tidy & get some cabbage rolls in the oven so he will have some dinner to take to work at 3:00pm when he leaves.

As soon as we wave good-bye, the kids & I will be in the Turret removing the paper & drop sheets & trying to put the room together again. While I was downstairs changing laundry over I also managed to gather some fabric from my stash so we can make plans for curtains & pillows. This is going to be awesome. Will post pics. when it's all completed, but I absolutely love the colour!! Have you guessed yet??

Okay, now for the pic. This is an easy, free pattern from Lion Brand's web site. It's called the "Bunny Blanket Buddy". I used Bernat "Satin" instead because of is washability & I had some on hand 'cause I use it to make my Amigurumis. The pattern was alright to follow if you have crocheted before, but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I'm making this to go with some other little goodies that I'm sending my penpal for her new Grandson who is due to arrive in Aug.

Well, cabbage rolls are almost ready so I best go; this also means that hubby is leaving in an hour so I can get down to business, lol. Peace out, Boop

Geocaching on Lake Simcoe

This weekend we decided to concentrate our efforts in & around Beaverton. The one pic shows hubby beside where I found the cache. Instead of hiding it around the roots or in a tree trunk (which is a common place), these people had hidden it "up" the tree's truck. Tricky spot to find; but cool.

We then went to the Beach to try another one. Problem was that I don't think the cache's owners planned on the spring thaw 'cause according to the co-ordinates, it would be in the lake, lol.

No nevermind though 'cause we saw some really neat things! All the ladybugs (1000's) & crayfish were coming out of hibernation. The kids & I (hubby doesn't like creepy crawly things, lol) had an absolute blast collecting shells & playing with all the crayfish.

After, we went into a little dinner right on the beach so we could get some fries, have a piddle & warm up. While I took the kids to the facilities, hubby waited for our order. As luck (or at least
mine if you know me) would have it I managed to pull off the doorknob & lock the kids & I in the washroom. This wouldn't have been so bad except I thought I was stuck in a time warp only to have to spend the rest of my days stuck at the "Beachcombers" forever. The place was chuck full of fishermen except for the woman & her daughter running the place. Here the kids & I sat giggling while trying to figure out who & when someone would come rescue us, lol.

I guess the great one heard my prayers (or laughter) & someone came to use the washroom unlocking the door. I'm not sure who was more surprised, but at least we were free! Management apologized, but the kids & I were more concerned about why Daddy hadn't been concerned?? He was outside too busy munching on our frie order! Geesh! We decided that he must have wished for that on the last falling star that we saw. Men; anything for some alone time.

Crochet Chihuahuas

I just finished a couple more Amigurumis (Japanese crochet animals). I actually had done the beige one a few weeks ago, but didn't want to post a pic. until the mini was finished. (I've always been fascinated with minis & knew I had to make one).

The beige chihuahua was done with a size 5 hook & Patons Satin yarn. The mini was done with perle cotton on a very small needle (don't know the size, but it was left to me from Gran & was once used to make fine laces). The parts on the mini I have made moveable just because I love to challenge myself (another form of self tortue I'm sure). It was a real pain in the butt to stuff all those little pieces too. Not sure that I'm in any hurry to make more real soon either, lol.

More geocaching planned for the weekend. Picked up some paint for the Turret today & love the colour (can you guess??). Don't want hubby to know about it yet so will have to wait until Mon. now to start it :o(. Can't wait until next week!!

Knitting Machine Guild

Today was knitting machine group day. I managed to get the machine together, cleaned & (with the help of Karen) working. We knitted a small swatch, but it was large enough to confirm that the machine can knit. The ribber attachment is going to need some work (read: replace the unit itself or all the needles; whichever works out cheaper).

My Ebay machine still hasn't come, but I guess the reg. UPS delivery is slow. Will contact the seller for a tracking # so I can at least feel better
knowing that it's made some progress getting here; sigh.

The 1st pic. is one of Gran's knitting machine all set up. I'm making the "Turret" a knitting sanctuary with an Asian theme if you're wondering why the window frames look 1/2 finished, lol. (Will post a pic of the rm. when it's finished). The 2nd pic. is a view from the Turret where it overlooks the highway & Lk. off in the distance. Should be a pretty nice place to knit when it's all done.

I've also been working on another baby shower gift, more Amis & some mending. Hoping to start a new project; perhaps another mini bead knitted purse. Until then, peace out, Boop.

This weekend's caches

This weekend's geocaching took us to a couple of new spots in the Kirkfield area. First was a point at a public boat launch. The 2 pics are the view from this cache.

I came across some water plants here to which I took a snippet of hoping to be able to put them in a project I have in mind. I think they may be the type that are used in the Beta fish vases you get at Michael's & have always wanted one of those.

The 2nd stop of the day was down a farmer's road to a trail that lead us to what looked like an old quarry. It was on the river, & so quiet & beautiful. The cache was hidden in amongst the rocks which was really neat. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack, lol. This was the most challenging cache so far & a lot of fun. I managed to find it before the rest of the family, & according to the logbook lots of people have taken at least 2 attempts.

We also checked up on our favourite Walleye cache at the Talbot sanctuary. There were about 20-30 of rather large Pickerel. Still waiting for the Suckers to be in full spawning mode; will keep you updated.

Penny Rug finished

Yup, the penny rug is finished. Got it done yesterday morning about 5:00 am. I've been using that time this week after hubby leaves for work (& kids are still asleep) to get this baby done. This is what I like most about these shifts. I have the same opportunity next week, but I haven't decided what project to work on. I think that the other piece of craft carnage will be completed this weekend so it'll likely be knitting. At least I can do that one in bed while I listen to some music & check out "Craftster" every once in a while.

I love the fact that "Craftster" isn't for any certain type or level of Artist or Craft person. Everybody & anybody are welcome and even encouraged to post pics of their latest projects. There are good, bad, weird, cool & amazing ones. Nobody seems intimidated at all. They even have areas for craft disasters & people seem keen to post pics of themselves or their projects asking for other people's advice.

I've seen 2 this past week alone where people wrote in (with a pic) asking for hairstyle suggestions so no topic seems off limits. Just a neat place to check out is you have some time. There's tons of swaps available too & some of the things that people send freely to one another is awesome. Young, old, punk, conservative and unique; something for everyone, so check it out.

Oh, the carnage!

Craft Carnage

Since I didn't have a finished project to upload at the moment, I decided to show you what's in the works. At the moment I'm working on a penny rug (from the workshop I took last Thurs.) & a mini. Amigurumi Chihuahua (of course you can't tell that from all the white bits in the bottom right corner, but I'm optimistic).

On the weekend, we took the kids to see "Ice Age". Of course I won't go into detail of how much I love animation (although you should know by now), but it was great. Better, & funnier that the 1st.

Sun. was geocaching day. In retrospec I would have rather been at home in a warm bed (likely why I'm not feeling well now), but we decided to brave the elements. Did 2 actual caches & checked on the Walleye one again. The 1st was of no interest, the 2nd had us at the Trent R. locks. It was very hard to be inconpicuous there with so may people fishing (for Jumbo Perch apparently; who knew), but we pulled it off. Kind of felt like spies (okay I have a great imagination; perhaps that's where te kids get it from? Will ponder this later.) Must be a good fishing spot 'cause I've never seen so many (especially considering it was such a bad weather day).

We then went to check out the Walleye Spawning area again. You wouldn't believe the difference. Last week there seemed to be thousands, & Sun. we saw 3! We also saw about 6 "Suckerfish" so I imagine that the Walleye are ending & the Suckerfish starting. Planning on checking it out again next weekend to see if my theory is correct. Such a great spot! Besides, I love watching fish for some reason; wonder what Freud would say? LOL.

Came home & watched "Rent" on Satellite. It's a musical about Aids. Had heard it raved about (was on Broadway for a few years), but had never seen it. Started out with too much singing (I realize it was a musical, but I thought there would be more acting like in Chicago). We did start to get into it after a while & it really turned out to be a great movie. The story definitely was one that needed to be told & some of the singing was great. Glad we stuck through it. We also watched "Walk the Line"; Johnny Cash story. This was simply awesome & I'd tell anyone to see it if you haven't already. Will watch this again & again for sure.

So, off to finish some projects 'cause I'd rather be knitting & won't allow it until these 2 are out of the way.

Penny Rug Class

Today didn't exactly worked out as planned, but at least I got to go to the workshop for 1/2 of it. I found out that Jennifer (who was teaching the class) is a very nice person (didn't really know her before today), who actually seems to "get" my sense of humour. She was also very good about helping me to get as much done as possible before I had to leave & lent me a pic. of the finished project so I could finish up on my own at home; to this I'm am very grateful.

Faye (our Guild Prez.) admitted that she had never read my blog, but promises to. I hope she'll leave feedback in the comment section (as with everyone else) so I actually have proof, lol. I did find out that she's still on dial-up so who could blame her? I know that getting highspeed this past year has changed our life so I'd never go back!! Hope you get that fixed soon Faye, you'll be amazed at the difference.

Talked to a few about starting a knitting/crochet group so I hope that works out. A small group at the workshop today, but a really great bunch. I really enjoyed the class & am going to get back at it now so I'll have pics soon.

Miniature bead knitted purse

This is the bead knitted purse necklace that I made for my MIL's 65th B-Day. We celebrated it Sat., but the actual day was on Easter.

This miniature purse is only about 2" in diameter. There are more than 1200 seed beads in the purse body alone that were strung on to the vintage variegated perle cotton that was left to me by my Great Aunt. (That alone took over 2 hrs., lol.)

I would definitely make more of these. I really enjoyed knitting this purse, but will include a coin or something in the pic. next time so you can truly get an idea of how small it actually is. The needles were size 0000 (similar to knitting with toothpicks) in case anyone is interested. The best part was that Nana loved it and that is the most rewarding part to any artist.

Spawning Walleye

The coolest bit of natural wonder

This is how we spent our Eater morning and I honestly can't think of better way. If you've never seen this event, you must go. We found this gem because of "Geocaching". I can't say enough for this sport.

Anyway, this particular geocache took us to the Talbot River. From about now until June the fish come here to spawn. First are the Walleye (Pickerel), the Sucker Fish & lastly the Bass. I've never seen anything so extraordinary in my life. There seemed to be thousands of these giant Walleye. They ranged from 12/2-3ft. in length. We were all in absolute awe. What a great thing to see.

Windy Ridge

This is one of the pics. from last week's geocaching. Not that I haven't been doing any art stuff (because I have), but there's a few projects in the works & none of them are in a finished state yet.

So last weekend we did 3 geocaches. 2 of them were here at the "Windy Ridge Conservation Area" in the Kawarthas. Yet again, another great place that we never would have gone to if it wasn't for this great game. It has really changed our lives.

The 1st pic. is from the top of a climb we had to do to get to the cache. The view is extraordinary & the pic. really doesn't do it justice. The elevation at this point (if you're interested in facts like I am) is 923ft.

The next pic. is of an amazing old tree at the base of the park. It is home to a porcupine which some other's have named "Mr. Prickles", lol. He wasn't in when we were there, but there are pics of him on the geocache site & a lot of porcupine poop (I mean alot too) around the tree to prove his existence. The tree is incredible. It looks like one of the tree spirits from "Lord of the Rings".

Anyway, projects on the go are: knitted poncho, 2 Amigurumis, & a prezzie for my MIL's 65th B-Day. Hopefully, I'll have some of them finished so I can post pics. later.

So, here lies my 1st attempts on the knitting machine. 3 little touques & a scarf. I also managed to start a belt, but wanted it doubled & still have to whip stitch the sides together. I've also enclosed a pic. of the machine I was lent. Mine will be the same when it gets here. Perfect to start, but I can already see that I'll want to get something more elaborate, lol.

Knitting Machine Addiction

So, this is what I've been doing since Tuesday. I had been invited to check out the "Machine Knitter's Group". These people are a very generous & kind group. I had called ahead to see if I could bring the children (I home-school) which was no problem. They meet in an old school house about 20 mins. from here. It has a kitchen, washroom & a large main area that can easily accommodate this group & their machines.

The reason that I was interested was because I thought I had a machine. By that I mean that I was left one, but upon opening the box, it only contained the accessories, but no beds. (This is quite important, lol.) I also know some of these people in this group because we've worked across from one another for the past 3 years (soon to be 4) at the Fall Fair where I demo crazy quilting.

The children were good & the group was great. I learned a whole lot about knitting machines! There is even a lovely mature man named "Norvall" who is always having to put $ in the cussing jar, lol. Everyone there seemed very eager & willing to share tips on everything from the types of machines, to what you could do with them.

Wed. I ended up going to the group leader's house (Karen) for a lesson. I learned more in 2 hours than I think I've ever learned in a class. Maybe it was because I was so interested. Perhaps it's because it's something I've always wanted to learn in my Grandmother's memory. Anyway, she even lent me one of her machines (can you believe that?) until I can get one of my own. It's a plastic bed (Brother KX-350) which I'm told is a good place to start. I have ordered one (the same model even) that will hopefully arrive soon (picked up on Ebay). I am so excited!

Thurs. I spent the day trying to figure out the machine. I had no trouble at all putting it together, but a little threading the thing. Once I got that sorted out, it was just trial & error. I did manage to make 3 mini touques & a mini scarf. My only trouble now is that I don't know what else to make, lol.

Today I had to clean. No, really. I think when Mark came home yesterday & we were all in our PJ's he thought that the knitting machine was going to take over our lives! Today, I promised myself that I wouldn't go on the machine until all the house chores were done. This way the house will be all clean for the weekend & I won't feel guilty working on the machine or Biz. + we all want to do some more geocaching too.

Now, this weekend we managed to go out "Geocaching". It's just like treasure hunting. You download info. about the treasure points (aka Cache's) from their website & then you're off. At the treasure point you will find trinkets, travel bugs (like army dogtags), etc. & a sign in book. This is world-wide game & there are many to choose from for car, bike, boat, foot, etc.

We were able to do 2 on Fri. night (yes, we did get soaked in the rain, but we're having too much fun for anyone to complain) & 2 on Sun. It's a wonderful way to get your family out together in the fresh air because once you've driven to the parking point there will be a small or long hike to choose from depending on the Cache. We're definitely going to do more of this. We all had a great time & it got the kids (& ourselves) away from the computer & outside so we could all get some exercise.

CQ/Art Doll face purses

Our March CQ'teer meeting was yesterday. We did our usual (& much anticipated) ATC swap, Show & Share & also presented our finished purses. This is a project that we've been working on for the past few months on & off.

MA suggested that we all give this purse a try since she had the pattern & thought it would make a nice group project. It always amazes me to see how each person interprets a pattern & makes it their own. They're all equally nice, but completely different.

Sue & Irene also brought in their finished Knitting Olympic projects for us to see. Sue, is the one that did the neat miniature knit on the ATC last month. This time she did a miniature knit beaded purse which measures about 2" in height. Irene got busy at the last min. & whipped up some knitting with wire to which she then made an aquatic scene with. Some really neat stuff, don't ya think?

A nice day

What a great day. First, my penpal called from Indiana, USA. This always puts me in a good mood. We talked, set up "Skype" (similar to MSN, but suppose to be better), exchanged some pics, etc.

Then, I had quite a few calls about my home-based Biz. that I'm in process of creating "The Creative Castle". I had calls about shows that I've been invited to, workshops & a talk scheduled for May. I also talked to one of my main suppliers (for the things that I don't make) & had a few calls from those wanting to put in orders. Everyone was so nice & positive that I couldn't help but feel good.

I also managed to home-school the kids, gets lots of chores done, make a good hearty meal for when hubby arrived home & finish my 2nd Amigurumi bunny which I've pictured here at the side.

I'm quite pleased with this one 'cause it's pretty much my design. I started following the pattern for the head & body & then decided to create the rest (including the face) on the fly. The results, I think, are much better (or at least closer to my "style" of work than the 1st one). Anyway, of those who really know me can tell you, I've always had trouble staying "in the box". In fact, I'm kind of like a caged animal if someone tries to put me into one. LOL.

I remember a couple of years ago a friend & I decided to make pin dolls from a free pattern that Patti Culea offered on the Net. This was suppose to be for a realistic looking lady. My friends turned out like the pattern, but mine turned into "The Grinch". I can only say that I like "green" skin & must have had the Grinch on my mind 'cause my hands just wouldn't co-operate; that's my story & I'm sticking to. Ah, another story for another day.

Proud British Knitter & a Hooker?

Okay, I've had a couple of inquiries about these 2 buttons on the left hand sidebar, lol. Knowing me the way you all do, it certainly wasn't for shock value; as if!!

Anyway, firstly I'll explain the proud British Knitter button. I had come across a site that had these buttons displayed & my curiosity got the better of me. Upon further research I discovered that there are different kinds of knitters. I always knew that people from Europe knitted "Continental", but really didn't know what that meant other than I was told they were faster.

So, if you're right-handed & also use your right hand to wrap the yarn around the needles, you are apparently a "Thrower". This also means that you are an "English style Knitter". If you are right-handed & use your left hand for wrapping the yarn around the needles then you are what they call a "Picker" (aka a "Continental Knitter").

Of course "Hooker" refers to a person that also "Crochets". According to some books, the name might have come from the times of the "Potato Famine in Ireland". In order to make $, women made Irish crochet laces to be sold overseas. In order to supplement the money they were paid, some warehouse owners would expect to also be given sexual favours for allowing them the privilege of working there. This might also be why prostitutes are sometimes called Hookers. Strange, but apparently true. Can you imagine? Geesh.

Well, hope I've cleared up some of the confusion. Today I'm working on ATC's, housework, the Biz & Amigurumis; not necessarily in that order.

Amigurumi; what??????

Amigurumi

I know, I know, but just hear me out. According to the definition that I found, Amigurumi means: a Japanese style crocheted anthropomorphic doll or stuffed toy. They are usually done in single crochet on the round, using bright colours; like Hello Kitty. You crochet all the parts & then sew them together after they're stuffed.

While they do seem quite addictive, the patterns are easily followed by beginners. I just recently joined the "Amigurumi-Along" in the Blogs. I was also able to purchase some inexpensive beginner patterns from "Roxycraft". They were clear, & easy to follow.

Give it a try, you might enjoy it. Besides if you can't beat'em, join'em. By this I mean that I'm trying to prepare you all 'cause I have a feeling I'll be making more, lol.

We'll this is a pic. of myself, Mark (hubby) & Steve (Bil). I am sooo happy that we got to spend some time together. Sat. we stayed up trying to catch up (81/2 yrs. worth) & then delivered him back to the inlaws the next afternoon. I'm not sure that he quite bonded with Daffodil (my potbelly piggy) or that he understood why I have doves as pets, but he accepted it non the less. The children were delighted to meet their uncle (afterall, they had all those yrs. of practical jokes to catch up on according to Joe).

My SIL & her 2 children joined us all for a family visit & dinner in the city. It was a feeling that was long overdue. It was just like the old days when we'd get together most weekends to exchange jokes, stories, & good times. I don't think you realize just how much you get from time spent like this until it's no longer there. We've made a pact to do this more often & whether Steve realizes it or not, he's going to keep better & more frequent contact. Just because you're out-of-province doesn't mean that you're let away with it, lol.

This Fri. we're heading back down to the city to get one more visit in before Steve heads back to B.C. We are going to miss him more than one would seem possible, but definitely going to keep better track of each other even if I have to drug & microchip the guy, lol.

Anyway, I know this entry has nothing to do with my art (or anyone elses for that matter), however maybe you should all spend some time this week trying to reconnect with your own families (or old friends). I think you will be pleasantly surprised just how inspiring the outcome could be. I feel rejuvinated & can't wait until I get back to the creativity. My whole spirit feels so renewed that this can only come through in my art.

Chicken Little

Nope, the sky isn't falling, but it may as well be. LOL. My dear brother-in-law is coming to town. Yup, it's absolutely true; no kidding. Mark & I haven't seen Steve in 81/2 yrs when he moved out west to be with his now wife Deb. It's almost impossible for me to grasp this, but it really doesn't seem like all that long ago. I think I must be in denial.

Steve is absolutely the greatest guy. I have wonderful memories of us staying up late talking & watching "The Munsters" & "The Adam's Family" in the middle of the night when Mark was in bed early so he could wake-up the next morning. Steve was & will always be the brother that I always wanted. I have missed him sooo much!!

I have also been cleaning up like a mad woman. I know Steve is coming to catch up with Mark, I & the kids. I know that he's not judgemental & couldn't care less how the house looks. I also know that the house really isn't that bad either & could easily be up to par with a little decluttering (which is what I'm doing). However, I think that since I have to do the Spring clean thing eventually, it's giving me a chance to use up the nervous energy that I have at the moment in anticipation of Steve's arrival.

Anyway, there's hardly been a moment for creativity unless you count the ways in which I've managed to hide some of the clutter that I just won't have time to deal with before the big day. Steve will be brought here by the inlaws Sat. just before noon & we will deliver him back to Oshawa Sun. afternoon. I know that it's going to be hard trying to catch up 81/2 yrs. in just over 24 hrs. but Mark & I are grateful for the opportunity. I'll keep you posted. 2 more sleeps!!

Demos

I got to demo Angelina Fibres today. One of my favourite things to do is experiment with new products & this time I got to show it off to people (unlike my hubby or his friends) that were actually interested, lol.

If you haven't tried these fibres yet, you're missing out. They add wonderful iridescent qualities to many different art mediums. They are extremely useful in, doll-making, quilting, sewing, scrapbooking & stamping.

I use (& now carry) the bondable line which comes in approx. 18 colours. When wanting to make your own fabric, you simply put a pinch of the fibres between 2 sheets of parchment paper & iron (silk setting) them gently for a few seconds. You can then easily peel the fused fabric from the parchment, cut into shapes & apply to your sewing projects.

Stampers & scrapbookers will enjoy this versatile product too. Ink up a stamp & place face up on a flat surface. Then place a pinch of Angelina fibres on top of the stamp. Place a sheet of parchment over the two, iron over the paper for a few seconds. You now have made an embossed iridescent fibre that you can adhere to your project.

Guild Day

Today was Guild Day. I look forward to this day because it's a time when I get to be "me". For a few hours each month I'm not known as "Mark's wife", or "mom", but feel like I'm a part of this world. There are even real adults with similar interests to talk to as well, lol.

It seems to me that this time is especially important at the moment. I'm trying to get my home-based business going, home-schooling my 2 kids (7 & 9) & be a good wife to a hubby on rotating shifts. (Did I also mention that we live in the country on top of a hill?) With all of this said, about 95% of my social life occurs through emails so one tends to get really excited about the prospects of getting out of the house alone to go anywhere & be with people, lol.

I was really excited about the new "Angelina Fibres" that I had gotten in & mentioned them in my guild ad for the past few months (& I also sell them at a better price than the speakers did I might add). But, I realized that even though I've been advertising in my Guild's newsletter for the past year, I'm still just the "raffle girl", or the young girl that helps MA with the library. I don't mind the part about being the young kid in a Guild when I'm actually 36, but it would be nice to be considered knowledgable on something. Perhaps I just have to be more outspoken or assertive, let people know what I can do, wear a Billboard!!! Who knows?? I've got a few ideas that might help people take notice, but any advice would be helpful. :o)

On the plus side, it was nice to see Lenore take her piece from the CQ RR that MA & I introduced to our quilting guild last year & make several more blocks on her own to make this very attractive wall hanging that I've pictured here; way to go Lenore.

After the meeting, some of the CQ'teers met at the local Tim's for coffee & I certainly hope that nobody got in trouble when we all lost track of the time & showed up to our homes 11/2 hrs late, lol. I for one blamed Irene, lol.

Knee high socks??

I know they're not for everybody, but I wanted some. In fact, my daughter even likes them & has requested a pair (in pink of course). I told her that I'd start hers once mine were done.

To tell you the truth, I just wanted to see how they would turn out. I didn't have a pattern for them, but referred to a couple of ones that I did have to figure out approx. how many stitches to cast on & then how to turn the heel. If you remember, I've only knit one previous pr. & that was for the "Olympics", lol.

I've also had a request from "Joe" for a sweater-vest because apparently "it's a chick magnet", lol. I'm sure he must have gotten this from Spongebob, but I'm not complaining. When your 7yr. old son asks you to knit him something, you do it & do it fast because you know this ain't going to last. I'm soaking it up while I can & luckily he isn't listening to his father's advice. :o)

MA's knitted denim bag

Today MA & I met for a craft day which also gave me the opportunity to take a pic. of her knitted denim bag for the blog. This is the one that I've been raving about, the one that she did for the "Knitting Olympics". The pattern said to cut up strips of denim & knot them together to form a denim yarn. You then knit the bag on large needles & line it (she used flannel). MA wants to emphasize that it does take it's toll on your hands. If she ever (I use this term in the hope that she really didn't mean never since I want one for Christmas, lol) did another, that she would definitely look for shirt or light weight denim because old jeans were just too hard to work with.

We ended up working on polymer clay today after our show & share. MA hasn't had much experience with it, but has really been wanting to learn. (This also might be due to the fact that I've been relentless in trying to suck her in for the past 2 yrs. at least, lol. )Anyway, we played with some molds that I had & then MA got carried away making faces. Not sure why she made so many, but I'm sure there was a reason, & it did seem to keep her amused. Please don't mention FIMO though, apparently she much prefers Sculpey & after her fit, it was just easier to agree, lol.

It was a nice day & now that the chores are done & the kids are asleep, I can finally get back to my sock. It's been calling for me all evening.

Knitting Olympic results: 3

Knitting Olympics ATC

Undoubtedly, this was the most clever project finished by any of our CQ'teers; I think we'd all agree. Sue was the one that joined the K.O. kicking & screaming so she got us back by making us all these tribute ATC's for our monthly swap.

We were all so tickled by these adorable treasures that I just had to post a pic. For those of you who don't know much about ATC's, they are miniature pieces of art that are done in a 21/2" x 31/2" format (the same size as a normal trading card) & then shared or traded. Great job Sue!!

I will share more pics once I've had a chance to photograph everyone else's pieces. Stay tuned, you won't be disappointed.

Sam's Pony

This is my daughter's 1st knitting project done on 2 sticks. I recently taught her how to finger knit & then how to use the "Knifty Knitter" loom. She is 10 & was pretty much able to follow the kit pattern. I did help with the decreases & the sewing, but other than that, she did it herself.

She was so excited about participating in the K.O. & delighted with the results of her new toy. Thank you to Minnie & Poppy who gave her the kit for X-Mas.

Skull Socks

Here are the "Skull Socks of Fury" that I did for the Knitting Olympics. These are my very 1st pr. of knitted socks. I've done tons of crocheted ones, but never had an opportunity to try knitted ones; other projects have always seemed to get in the way.

Anyway, the Olympics gave me the chance to finally achieve this goal. They weren't as difficult as others might have you believe. Perhaps I was just lucky & came across a good pattern; who knows.

Best Olympics ever!!

Way to go team!! From what I hear, Stephanie (aka "The Yarn Harlot") finished her sweater. I had my doubts the other day, but thought if anyone could manage it, she could. What an example!!

As people start to get back to me, it looks like the knitting Olympics brought out the best in everyone. Not only is this the best ever showing that Canada as a whole has had in the Winter Olympics, but some of the personal accomplishments that the Knitting Olympics made us all strive for were more than awe-inspiring. I cannot wait until all the stories are in.

I myself managed to complete my 1st pair. of knitted socks Wed. It's one of those things that any knitter wants to aspire to, but seems to be intimidated by the horror stories, lol. However, when I checked them Sat. night, I realized that there was a mistake in the toe part of one of them. Wanting only the best, I was able to take them apart & get them back together by midnight.

Samantha (age 10) finished a knitted pony that is just sooo cute. My mother who has been intimidated by anything that didn't resemble a dishcloth or baby blanket (obviously she has trouble thinking outside of the box; literally) finally had the courage to take on the knitted baby poncho that she's had the pattern for at least 20+ yrs. It's a garment that asks to make 2 (one for the lining), but for our purposes, we told her that one side in 16 days was more than enough.

MA did this really, really cool denim knitting bag. You cut denim into strips, tie them all together to make a denim yarn of sorts & then knit it according to the pattern. It is just the hippest thing, but please don't ask her about her hands. Apparently knitting denim is something that isn't for us that may have arthritis (unless you're a saddest).

Sue (who will tell everyone that will listen that she only signed up because I wouldn't stop bugging her, lol) did a few things. We haven't seen the others, but the one that she brought to our CQ'teer meeting on Wed. was highly imaginative. She made us all ATC's using yarn playing cards. On the other side of the card she had made a miniature piece of real knitting using thread & toothpicks!! We were all blown away!! This chick is funny & terribly creative. If she weren't so much fun, you'd all hate her. LOL.

I hope to get some pics posted tomorrow of at least some of the items. I'm just so proud of everyone. I want to also thank all that took up my extended challenge when I told them about "Knitting Olympics". Also a special thanks to MA for introducing me to the harlot a couple of yrs. ago & to whom I'm eternally grateful.

Curling Gold!

Is that not awesome?? What a great backdrop for the knitting olympics. So, we watched, we knit, we cheered & we won; too cool.

Before & after the event, I worked on the crazy quilt pouch that the CQ'teers are working on as a group. I managed to get quite a bit done & am optimistic about the possibilities of finishing sometime this weekend. I have to run some errands tomorrow & finish up some cleaning up around the house, but I hope to get those out of the way early so I can get back to the CQing.

Pet pics were added to the gallery today as well as some updates to the main site. Mark also worked on the teaching facilty Thursday which was uplifting to say the least.

Between the sheets: Meeting: Part 2

The Angelina Fibres were up next. These are soft, light, very iridescent fibres that fuse to themselves to create a material (or at least in the case of the bondable type). You can use them with or without stamps, but for our purposes, we used the stamps.

Instructions

-take a small amt. of Angelina fibres & place them upon a pre-inked stamp
-place a single layer of parchment on top of the stamp & fibre & apply iron
-we used a dry iron at med. heat
-apply med. pressure for a few secs. or until the stamp image starts to show through the parchment
-peel off the fibre from the stamp

Conclusions

-a wonderfully unique fibre that has great iridescent features
-takes on a different look depending on the background that it's placed on
-choose uncomplicated stamps for the best results
-use dark or bright inks on light fibres, metallics on dark fibres
-can use ink or no ink with the stamp method to achieve different results

The meeting was extremely good. We had a lot of fun (too much, according to my hubby who found it incredibly odd to watch 4 grown women drooling over a coloured blob that resembled a fur ball, lol). We laughed, chatted, & shared 3 different chocolate treats along with lots of coffee (don't worry, it was decaffeinated).

We also exchanged our ATC's (which I will post pics. of later), & had a great "Show & Share". I am so proud of this group & the very talented women that belong to it.

Monthly gathering: Part 1

Today was the much anticipated monthly CQ'teer meeting. On the itinerary we had scheduled experiments with Tyvek (Irene teaching) & Angelina Fibres (Boop teaching).

Irene came prepared with pieces of Tyvek with a leaf image already drawn out for us. The idea was to demonstrate how the Tyvek would react to heat (iron). She had also painted one side of the Tyvek with Lumiere paints (silver) so we could see how perhaps the 2 different sides might compare.

Instructions

- cut out the pattern on the Tyvek
-place Tyvek between 2 sheets of parchment paper
-use med. pressure & press down on the parchment sandwich with the iron (cotton setting, no steam) in 5 second intervals checking for desired effect between.

We all took turns & concluded the following things:

-the more pressure, the more the Tyvek reacted to the heat & the faster it shriveled up
- the Tyvek would have concave or convex marks depending on which side was up, but the amt. of reaction was not dependent on if you applied heat to the Tyvek face up, face down or heated both sides
-you could achieve "friendly plastic-like" results by adding some Angelina Fibres to either side of the Tyvek & then heating it between the parchment.
-it did have somewhat of an odor so if you were working with it for more than a few mins. ,
you should work on the side of caution; be in a well-ventilated area or use a respirator

Crazy Quilt class in Bobcaygeon

Well, today was the day. I haven't been posting this week because I've been busy preparing for the "CQ workshop" which was today. I felt really prepared so I hope that came across at the class.

The class took place at the "Wray House" in Settler's Village in Bobcaygeon. It's kind of like "Pioneer Village" for those of you who are familiar with it in T.O. Anyway, it was a lovely setting & a really nice group. I was made to feel totally comfortable & the class was great.

I told the girls that I would post their "before" shots tomorrow in the gallery so they'd be inspired to finish them. We did talk about meeting in a month or so to "show & tell" our finished pieces & I plan to hold them to it. (I know Sue is out there saying "peck, peck, peck". lol)

We also had the opportunity to do some experimenting with the new "Angelina Fibres" that I had gotten in for the shop. The results were really neat, & I will definitely have to do some more testing. It was nice to have others with you while conducting creative experiments. Unlike the family members I usually call to "come & see what I did", these girls were actually enthusiastic & excited about seeing the results, lol.

Now that this workshop is out of the way, I pledge to keep up with the daily blogging. I'm really excited about getting the pics up in the gallery & getting the main site finished now too. Thank you to all the wonderful ladies that I met at the workshop today & I can't wait until we get together again.

Are we not doing great at the Olympics?? I am so pleased with our Canadian efforts the past few days. What a women's hockey team we have!! Absolutely awesome! I've been glued (possibly addicted) to the T.V. whilst working on my own contribution for the "Knitting Olympics".

In addition to my skull socks, Samantha has finished one side of the knitted pony, & mom has been diligently plugging ahead on her baby poncho. We'll get an update from the CQ'teers tomorrow at our monthly meeting.

Devoted Olympian or just plain nuts??

So like the rest of you (approx. 4000 now) that signed up for the "Knitting Olympics", I waited with great anticipation for the flame to be lit yesterday. I made sure that everything was ready: the house, kids, pets, self. Daughter & I sat ready with our knitting & TV on. Then it happened, we lost the signal.

Of all the times for the blasted TV to decide not to work, it had to be then. I called mom in a panic & she said that the actual flame wouldn't be lit until about 2:00pm. She would call & let it ring 2 times so that I would know when to start knitting. As I laid out my stuff, I thought that at least I could do the gauge so that I'd be really ready.

This is when I realized that I didn't have the correct needles. This part didn't bother me as much as the fact that I had ample opportunities to have had this sorted out earlier in the week when I was actually in town. I even pondered over the needles Wed. With MA, but was sure that I had the correct ones at home. Needless to say that the unmarked pkg. left to me from my granny that I thought were the correct ones, were not.

So, I then did what any devoted athlete would do. I went downstairs to collect some chicken skewers from my polymer stash (I use these for shaping clay) . I cut them in half & got out the knife. I was not going to let a little technicality keep me from performing in my event. I would whittle myself a set.

Now, I have never whittled anything best I can remember, but I had seen my dad do it numerous times as a kid. I then sanded them on a bit of sand paper from my stash. I was pleased at my accomplishment. I ran upstairs & sat back down waiting for either the TV to start working or the phone to ring twice. Nothing yet. Called mom who had gotten so caught up in the Games that she forgot to call, but assured me that I could start. I had measured the needles with size checker & realized that they were perfect size 2's.

It wasn't until I had done a couple of rounds & stabbed myself numerous times that I realized several things.

I'm really good at whittling, in fact so much so that I should have been born Tribal 'cause no animal was going to survive after being hit with one of my arrows they're so dang sharp
These probably would be classified illegal & certainly wouldn't be allowed on any plane
if I was ever cast on the show "Survivor" I would be able to impress everyone by being able to whittle needles & then knit them all grass outfits
for the sake of blood levels I had to come up with a better plan

Once I came to terms with my findings, I got out granny's needles again. Although 13/4 sizes too big, I also realized that when you're a tight knitter you can make the same gauge. Hallelujah, let the games begin!

PS- when hubby got home from work he managed to fix the TV & I did get to watch the ceremonies later that night when they aired it again. (Just in case you all were wondering, lol)

Getting ready?

Today I spent the day getting things caught up around the house in anticipation of tomorrow's events. I use "The FLYlady" method of cleaning except I work for 30-45 mins. at a time; I just can't seem to pull myself away in 15. Anyway, if you don't know what I'm talking about & have never been to her site you should really give it a go. The methods she teaches for organizing your house & life are especially good for those of us that often feel overwhelmed by the concept. I've been using it for about 31/2 yrs. now (thx. to MA) & find it very doable.

I was also able to work on the pouch yesterday. MA & I had decided that we really needed to get back on it & thought it might be something better handled with each other for company. It seemed to do the trick because we each have the embellishing part to do next.

Tomorrow is the start of the "Knitting Olympics" & according to the "yarnharlot" there's about 3300 people signed up! Wow, who would have thought that her idea would become this big.

I've pretty much heard from everyone in the group too & I will keep everyone up to date on the progress. Make sure that you drink lots of water, get up every 1/2 hour to stretch. (If you're drinking the water you'll have to get up for a pee anyway, lol.) Have chocolate & your cordless phone nearby in case you need a boost or moral support.

Just in time wrist warmers.

Sam with her new wrist warmers.

So, as promised, here's a pic of Sam & her new wrist warmers. I'm still working on the headband, but wanted to post a pic before ya'll lost interest, lol. It was an easy pattern from Bernat. "Cool-for-School Wrist Warmers" You just have to sign up for a membership in order to view the pattern, but that's free too. We used Bernat "baby coordinates" which is a sports weight (in baby pink) & size 3mm needles because Sam is a tweenie & the pattern was written for young women.

I also finished up the 3 sets (5each) of ATC's this morning. Now I can start working back on the pouch. Nothing more to report. There's a good link on the yarnharlot's post today if you're involved in the Knitting Olympics. I'm still waiting for most of the CQ'teers to let me know what project they're going to start on Fri. during the opening ceremonies.

Olympic training

I got my daughter's wrist warmers finished (will post a pic. tomorrow) & am now on to the matching headband. I also managed (after the daily mundane chores were accomplished) to work on some ATC's. Unfortunately, I can't post those pics until after the next CQ'teer meeting. I was quite pleased with the way they turned out & can't wait to show them.

Tomorrow after home-schooling, I will have to work on the pouch that is due for the same meeting. It's a project that MA shared with us & kind of got put on the back burner, but I think we're all due to finish it for month's end.

Not sure if this post will go thru 'cause Blogger is doing maintenance tonight, but I promise to edit & add to the post sometime tomorrow.

Gumby as the Crooner

Yes, it's true. Today is Gumby's birthday. I can't believe that you all didn't know. Geesh, he's just like the coolest guy ever. I mean ,what more could you want in a man? He's sensitive, flexible & green for goodness sakes, lol.

For those of you who don't know me, I am a huge animation buff. I tend to relate all of life's experiences to cartoons (much to everyone's dismay & confusion). My friends often refer to me as "animated" & would probably already have known that today was the big birthday 'cause I would have reminded you, lol.

So, sit back, play with your polymer, be creative, wear green & toast Gumby. Cheers!

PS- Tonight is also the biggest UFC fight ever. The last of 3 between Randy & The Ice-man. (Randy was the coach of the green team during season 1 of the "So you want to be an ultimate fighter; guess who I'm cheering for? LOL)

Knitting Olympics

Just wanted to remind everyone to finish figuring out what project they're going to do for the "Knitting Olympics". If you're unsure of what I'm talking about, you can check out the yarnharlot site & find out what all the buzz is about. http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/olympics2006.html

If you're not a knitter, then here at the Castle, we're encouraging everyone to just try a project in a medium that they enjoy. I for one will be knitting, but tat, crochet, paint or whatever makes you smile. Start date is Feb.10th (opening ceremonies) & end date is Feb. 26th (closing ceremonies). That's 16 days to create something beautiful and accomplish a personal goal.

Okay people, don't even say it, lol. I am often looked at as a little obsessive (MA, say nothing), but I just didn't like the look of the other blog. That & the fact that I could post pics right to the blog & had to link everything. I do want a gallery, but feel that pics make the blog better & if I couldn't have that, then what was the point of having a blog that was suppose to concentrate on "art"!

So, I will work out the bugs with this one. I really like the look, feel & all the features. So bare with me, as it shouldn't take too long to figure it all out.
